Project to boost Assam’s concert economy coming up near airport: CM

GUWAHATI, Aug 1: The Assam government has initiated the acquisition of land between 400 and 500 bighas near the LGBI airport here, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed here on Friday.

“The government’s aim is to secure land where genuine investors have already invested. Residents of the area need not worry about eviction. This move is to safeguard the land for the people of Assam,” Sarma informed.

“We plan to develop three key projects – a major stadium to boost Assam’s concert economy; a convention centre on the lines of Bharat Mandapam, and an entertainment zone, not as big but inspired by Universal Studios,” the chief minister said.

He clarified that the three projects would be exclusively state government projects.

PM’s visit to Assam

On the other hand, the chief minister informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would pay a day-long visit to Assam on September 8 to inaugurate the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bhupen Hazarika.

“The Prime Minister will first visit Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) in Golaghat district where he will dedicate to the nation a bio-ethanol plant, set up at a cost of over Rs 4,200 crore,” Sarma said.

“Thereafter, the Prime Minister will travel to Mangaldoi in Darrang district, where he will lay the foundation of the Guwahati-Ring Road (to be set up at a cost of Rs 7000 crore); a bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Kuruwa and Narengi in Guwahati, and also lay the foundation stone of the Mangaldoi Medical College Hospital,” the chief minister said.

In the evening, the Prime Minister will arrive in Guwahati and inaugurate the birth centenary celebrations of Assam’s cultural doyen Bhupen Hazarika, he said.

“Our plan in the next six months is to inaugurate and initiate various development projects in Assam to showcase before Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the generous funding by the central government to Assam has been utilised properly and put to use for public welfare,” the chief minister said.

The chief minister further informed that Union home minister Amit Shah would inaugurate the newly-constructed Raj Bhavan here on August 29.

“The Union home minister will also address a convention of newly-elected NDA panchayat members later in the day,” he said.
