SHILLONG, Aug 19: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Tuesday urged the Health Department to introduce reservation of Post-Graduation (PG) seats for Khasi and Jaintia domicile students at the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH).
In a letter submitted to the Director of Health Services (Medical Education – Research), the KSU said that while the establishment of this Central Campus in Meghalaya has been a matter of pride, it has come to light that no provision currently exists for PG reservations in favour of students from the region.
“As a result, many deserving local graduates, despite completing their undergraduate studies here, are unable to secure admission into PG courses. This has caused widespread dissatisfaction and discouragement among our youth,” the KSU stated.
The students’ union suggested that a defined quota of PG seats be introduced for students who are permanent residents of Meghalaya. It further recommended that preference be given to local students who have completed their undergraduate degree from NEIAH, to ensure continuity in their academic growth.
Additionally, the KSU proposed that the department introduce special relaxation measures—such as weightage marks or reserved slots—for underprivileged communities within the state.
“Such measures will not only promote equitable access to higher education but will also help in the academic and professional upliftment of our region, ensuring that the Central Campus fulfils its responsibility towards the local community,” the union added.
The KSU urged the DHS (Medical Education – Research) to address this concern at the earliest and take necessary action.
