JOWAI, Aug 25: The Hynniewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBDRF) on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Border Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills, GH Passah, demanding the return of Block-I and Block-II to Meghalaya, as they historically belonged to the state.
HBDRF chairman Chandame Sungoh, speaking to the media, said that a similar demand had already been submitted in writing on August 13 to the Chief Minister, several state ministers, and other government officials, urging them to resolve the long-pending boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.
“We have already sent several communications to the government and are still awaiting a response. If the government does not take this matter seriously, the Khasi-Pnar people living along the border areas of Block-I and Block-II will have no option but to adopt other measures to protect their land and resources,” Sungoh warned.
He further informed that the Forum has secured an appointment with the state’s Member of Parliament, Dr AJ Syngkon, on August 29. The Forum has prepared all necessary documents to present to the MP in support of the villages located within Block-I and Block-II.
Sungoh also cautioned residents not to be swayed by members of the Karbi community, who he alleged were attempting to carry out development projects in these border villages. He stressed that as residents of Meghalaya, the people must reject any assistance or schemes originating from Assam.
Regarding the role of the Meghalaya government, Sungoh noted that discussions have already begun to officially recognise the villages in Block-I and Block-II in terms of documentation and developmental needs. He urged border residents to remain patient, saying the next step now is to await the final settlement of the boundary dispute between the two states.
