TURA, Aug 25: Shops and business establishments across Garo Hills on Monday downed their shutters for two hours (12 PM to 2 PM) in a show of support to the call of various civil society organsiations (CSOs) of the region in support of the protesting employees of the GHADC led by the Non Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA).
The NGEA protest has already completed 50 days with various CSOs including the GSU, FKJGP, AYWO, ADE, TGSU and FAF coming out in support of the protesting employees who are demanding their 43-month salary payment that is due to them.
On Sunday, Church Elders along with the Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma, carried out a prayer service to seek reforms of the GHADC as an institution, as well as the clearance of dues to employees.
Shops remained closed through the two-hour period across the region and only opened after the 2 hour completion, for business. The CSOs have reiterated their commitment to the cause of reform in the GHADC including the introduction of finance and service rules to ensure transparency in the Council and its affairs.
No new agitation has been announced for now by the CSOs.
