Accident in Pakistan kills 4, including child
PESHAWAR, Aug 26: At least four people including a child were killed and four others injured on Tuesday when a passenger vehicle plunged into a gorge in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, rescue officials said. The accident occurred in the mountainous Buner district of the province when the vehicle suffered a brake failure, according to rescue authorities. The vehicle was travelling from Sawari to Phulwari at the time of the accident. Among those killed were two women and a child. The bodies and those injured were shifted to District Headquarters Hospital, Daggar for medical treatment, officials added. (PTI)
Pak’s Punjab evacuates nearly 2 lakhs amid flooding fears
LAHORE, Aug 26: Nearly two lakh people have been evacuated from flood-prone areas in Pakistan’s Punjab province due to rising water levels in eastern rivers. The Indus, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers are experiencing low to high flooding due to torrential monsoon rains in catchment areas. The evacuation operation is being conducted in Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Layyah, Bhakkar, and Narowal. Over 175,000 people have left their houses on their own, while 25,000 people have been rescued through boats by government rescue agencies. Hundreds of houses have been damaged by the floods. India has communicated flood warnings to Pakistan through diplomatic channels, marking the first known official contact between the two sides since a four-day conflict in May. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of heavy rains across most parts of Pakistan until August 30. (PTI)
Australia police hunt gunman after 2 officers killed, 1 shot
WELLINGTON, Aug 26: Two police officers were killed and another seriously wounded in a shooting at a property in Porepunkah, Victoria, Australia. The suspect killed a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable. The man fled alone, heavily armed, into the surrounding forest. Police are still searching for the man’s wife and two children. Another detective was shot and is undergoing surgery. The shooting has sparked national news coverage, as shooting deaths in Australia are rare. The last police officer to be shot and killed on duty in Australia was in 2023 in South Australia state. Afghan forces destroy nearly 30 tonnes of narcotics
KABUL, Aug 26: Afghan police have seized 29.8 tonnes of illegal drugs in Nangarhar province, including methamphetamine, heroin, hashish, and opium poppy. 2,586 individuals were arrested for smuggling, purchasing, and selling the drugs. The interim Afghan government has vowed to fight the menace until the country becomes a drug-free nation. The police have also uncovered weapons and ammunition during operations. (IANS)
