DHAKA, Sep 1: Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman met Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Monday to discuss the military’s role in supporting the civil administration amid worsening law and order in the country.
The army described the meetings as “courtesy calls,” noting that Gen Zaman also briefed them on his recent visit to China.
According to a statement from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, Yunus thanked the army for its continued support in maintaining law and order but stressed the need for a streamlined approach. He called for a clearly defined command structure and close coordination among all security forces ahead of the upcoming elections. Gen Zaman assured the interim government of full military cooperation and pledged support for its initiatives.
The meetings came just two days after military action against a political outfit linked to last year’s student-led movement that overthrew former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The crackdown drew strong condemnation from Yunus’s government and various political parties.
Yunus’s office issued an official statement condemning the “brutal attack” on Nurul Haque Nur, leader of the Gano Odhikar Parishad, during the operation. The interim government has promised a “thorough and impartial investigation” into the incident, vowing that no one—regardless of position—would be spared from accountability.
Gen Zaman was accompanied by senior military officials and first met Yunus at his official residence, followed by talks at the Bangabhaban presidential palace. His meetings also reportedly included Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed a day earlier, reflecting growing concern over civil-military coordination during a politically sensitive time. (PTI)
