Shillong, Sep 4: Meghalaya has faced embarrassment after Mawtneng U.P. & Secondary School was disqualified from the 64th International Subroto Mukherjee Football Cup 2025 in Bengaluru after four of its players were found to be above the age limit.
Mawtneng U.P. & Secondary School qualified to represent Meghalaya in the Under-15 Boys’ category after winning the State-Level Subroto Cup. The team was slated to face Gujarat in its opening fixture but was forced to return home.
This year’s edition of the Subroto Cup implemented stricter checks, with all registrations conducted online and age documents scrutinised more thoroughly. Out of 34 schools, as many as 21 were disqualified, including Mawtneng.
The Sports and Youth Affairs Department has not released an official statement and officials are awaiting a detailed briefing from the team before clarifying the issue.
The department is expected to convene a meeting with the school authorities to investigate the incident.
