KHLIEHRIAT, Sep 6: Sutnga-Saipung MLA, Santa Mary Shylla, has inaugurated a Miyawaki Afforestation Project at Narwan (Kmai Prut) village under Saipung Block, which is aimed at restoring mining-affected land.
The project, covering two hectares and funded by the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) at a cost of Rs 16.5 lakhs, was launched in the presence of district officials and community members.
During the programme, Shylla emphasised the need to balance development with environmental conservation and urged locals to take ownership of the initiative.
On the other hand, East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, Shivansh Awasthi, highlighted the project’s significance and its potential to inspire similar initiatives using funds like the Meghalaya Environment Protection and Restoration Fund (MEPRF).
Officials, including SDO Manish Kumar and BDO Dr R. Pyrtuh, underlined the ecological and economic benefits of the Miyawaki method, which enables fast, dense forest growth with low maintenance.
A tree plantation drive was also held during the programme, showcasing the community’s commitment to sustainability.
It may be mentioned that the Miyawaki Afforestation Method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, promotes faster forest growth by planting trees closely together in multiple layers. This approach not only accelerates forest development but also reduces the need for long-term maintenance.
