London, Sep 13: A thrilling weekend of Premier League action saw a mix of hard-fought wins, last-gasp drama, and frustrating stalemates across the division.
At Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth capitalised on their superior quality to edge past Brighton in a scrappy contest.
The hosts took the lead through a brilliant Alex Scott strike, finishing neatly after Antoine Semenyo laid the ball off on the edge of the area. Brighton, rocked by early injuries to Jack Hinshelwood and Maxim de Cuyper, struggled to impose themselves in the first half. They did find a response immediately after the break when Kaoru Mitoma headed home a Yankuba Minteh cross.
However, Bournemouth regained the advantage when Semenyo converted a penalty after Evanilson was fouled by Jan Paul van Hecke. Despite a better second-half showing, Brighton could not find an equaliser, allowing Bournemouth to see out a hard-earned 2-1 victory.
Newcastle, meanwhile, claimed their first three points of the season with a narrow 1-0 win over Wolves at St James’ Park. Newly signed German international Woltemade made an instant impact, nodding in Jacob Murphy’s precise cross in the 30th minute to score on his Magpies debut. Wolves started brightly and tested Nick Pope early, but Newcastle’s midfield and attacking cohesion eventually prevailed. Sandro Tonali’s second-half strike rattled the post, while Harvey Barnes and Murphy were denied by a disallowed goal and close-range blocks, but the visitors could not find a breakthrough, leaving Woltemade’s header as the decisive moment.
Everton were left frustrated at Goodison Park after a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa. Striker Beto missed crucial chances in both halves, including a glaring opportunity in the opening minutes. Emiliano Martinez, back in goal for Villa, was in inspired form, keeping the Toffees at bay with key saves, including a superb stop from Michael Keane’s header. Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye continually probed, but Everton could not convert dominance into goals, leaving David Moyes’ side with just a point despite 20 shots to six.
Crystal Palace were held to a goalless draw by newly promoted Sunderland at Selhurst Park. The first half saw little rhythm, with only Yeremy Pino threatening Palace’s offensive spark. Jean-Philippe Mateta forced a late save in the second half, while Sunderland remained largely subdued. Robin Roefs made crucial stops to preserve the Black Cats’ point, leaving Palace eighth and Sunderland sixth after a dull 0-0 stalemate.
Finally, Fulham secured their first win of the season in dramatic fashion, courtesy of a 94th-minute own goal from Leeds’ Gabriel Gudmundsson.
The decisive moment followed a fingertip save by Karl Darlow from Brazilian winger Kevin, with the subsequent corner met inadvertently by Gudmundsson to hand Marco Silva’s side a 1-0 victory. Leeds’ struggles in London continue, now extending to nine consecutive Premier League defeats dating back to May 2022.
From Bournemouth’s gritty display to Fulham’s stoppage-time drama, the Premier League weekend delivered everything fans love: goals, heartbreak, and moments of sheer unpredictability. (Agencies)
