Nearly 500 PwDs receive free aids at Umling prog

NONGPOH, Sep 18: Close to 500 persons with disabilities, including elderly citizens, received free aids and assistive devices such as wheelchairs, tricycles, hearing aids, crutches and other support equipment during a Samajik Adhikarita Shivir (SAS) organised at Umling C&RD Block in Ri-Bhoi district on Tuesday.
The programme was conducted by the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) in collaboration with the Office of the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, under the aegis of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Similar camps are being organised across 74 locations in the country under the SAS initiative. In Ri-Bhoi district alone, around 2,000 beneficiaries have been identified, of which nearly 500 received assistance during Tuesday’s distribution camp under the ADIP and RVY schemes.
