NONGPOH, Sep 27: A truck loaded with coke overturned on National Highway-6 at Umsawnongkharai in Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday morning after colliding with a small car and attempting to flee the scene.
The incident occurred around 11:40 am, when the truck (ML05AB9564), travelling from Shillong towards Guwahati, stopped abruptly after some cash belonging to the driver fell near the Umsawnongkharai bridge. In an attempt to retrieve the money, the driver reversed the vehicle and rammed into an Alto K10 (ML04C8496) coming from the same direction, damaging the car’s front portion.
Panicked after the collision, the truck driver sped towards Nongpoh. However, while negotiating a curve near the Umsawnongkharai diversion, he lost control, causing the truck to overturn on the divider and spill its load of coke across the highway.
The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled before police arrived. An investigation has been launched, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the absconding driver.
