SHILLONG, Sep 27: Meghalaya hosted the 3rd Indian Responsible Tourism State Summit (IRTSS) 2025 on the World Tourism Day at the State Convention Centre here.
Tourism pioneers, passionate about bringing a different tourism experience to travellers and tourists, were awarded on the occasion.
This edition of the IRTSS, after two successful editions held in Meghalaya, celebrated tourism pioneers, redefining tourism experiences for travellers. The event showcased sustainable practices, cultural promotion, and environmentally responsible tourism initiatives, positioning Meghalaya as a model for India’s tourism sector.
In her address, Brenda Lee Pakyntein, Joint Secretary & Tourism Director, Government of Meghalaya, emphasised the growing visibility of responsible tourism.
“This concept of responsible tourism is really gaining visibility. It’s in the limelight. Sustainability is something that meets our current requirements without affecting future requirements,” she said. She added that consensus-building among stakeholders, from industry partners to local communities, was essential for tourism’s long-term sustainability.
Gerald Samuel Duia, founder of Duia Trailblazers, presented a case study on tourism and sustainable transformation, voicing concerns over garbage pollution, irresponsible tourist practices, overcrowding, and mass tourism. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to ensure a sustainable Meghalaya.
A panel discussion, titled Responsible Tourism in Meghalaya: A Collective Vision, featured visual artist and musician Benedict Skhemlang Hynniewta, culinary expert Adonijah Lyngdoh and founder and trustee of Titli Trust Sanjay Sondhi.
It was moderated by Nishtha Pandey of Outlook Responsible Tourism. The discussion focused on promoting and preserving Meghalaya’s culture, cuisine, nature, and music, while maintaining the state’s traditions and identity.
