SHILLONG, Sep 27: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is working to establish a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) facility at the institute under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
Admitting that many cancer patients currently have to travel to Guwahati for PET-CT scans, NEIGRIHMS Director Dr Nalin Mehta said that various facilities, including radiation oncology, are already functional at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) in the institute.
He stated that the wards are ready and operation theatres will be made functional soon.
The RCC at NEIGRIHMS has been operational since mid-2023 or early 2024 with certain facilities, especially in radiotherapy, functioning daily since at least July 2024.
While the full 252-bed facility’s operations are being phased in, comprehensive cancer care services, including advanced equipment and staff, are already in place. Meanwhile, the NEIGRIHMS Director also stressed the need to aggressively screen and treat cancer, noting that the incidence of some cancers is quite high.
He added that NEIGRIHMS has adopted a two-pronged approach of awareness and preventive measures to tackle the disease in the state.
