Sohra Half Marathon draws record 10,576 runners

Shillong, Sep 27: Dinesh Kumar clocked 1:03:24 to win the men’s 21K Elite category, while Tamsi Singh took the women’s crown in 1:15:48 as the 4th Sohra International Half Marathon turned into a grand celebration of endurance, community spirit and Meghalaya’s natural splendour on Saturday.
The event, which drew a record 10,576 participants, also saw Meghalaya’s own Iohborlang Nongspung (1:05:22) and Phyrnai Kyndait (1:27:29) emerge champions in the 21K Open categories for local athletes. In the 10K races, Navneet Singh Rathore (29:31) and Neha Mishra (34:14) topped the men’s and women’s 18–39 years sections, while seasoned campaigners Swonding Mawlong (37:50) and Thlingda Wanniang (47:25) won the veteran 55+ categories.Athletes from across India, along with 13 international runners, joined first-timers, senior citizens and children in making the marathon the biggest yet. Over 2,000 participants hailed from Sohra itself, reflecting the deep local enthusiasm.
Organised by the Meghalaya State Olympics Association (MSOA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs and recognised by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the race was flagged off by Olympic medallist and six-time world champion M.C. Mary Kom. She praised the breathtaking setting and lauded the state’s initiative in promoting athletics.
“This event marks a milestone as Meghalaya prepares to host the National Games. It is heartening to see the enthusiasm and sportsmanship of participants from near and far,” Mary Kom said.
Director of Sports & Youth Affairs D.D. Shira described the turnout as “a reflection of Meghalaya’s growing passion for sports,” while highlighting the efforts of volunteers and local communities in ensuring smooth conduct.
The day was filled with heartwarming moments, from children running hand-in-hand with parents to a senior woman in her traditional jainkyrshah completing the 5K “Run for Fun” to loud cheers.
Prize money worth ₹15.50 lakh was distributed across categories, with dignitaries including Shella MLA Balajied Synrem, Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang, Commissioner & Secretary Matsiewdor War Nongbri, and Deputy Commissioner R.M. Kurbah in attendance.
With its blend of elite competition, inclusivity, and the stunning backdrop of Sohra’s waterfalls and greenery, the marathon once again strengthened its growing reputation as both a sporting spectacle and a tourism draw.As the curtains fell on the marathon amid applause and celebration, the event reinforced Sohra’s growing status as both a sporting and cultural landmark. With record participation, inspiring performances, and the breathtaking charm of Meghalaya as its backdrop, the 2025 edition not only crowned champions but also cemented the Sohra Half Marathon’s place on India’s sporting calendar.
