London, Sep 27: West Ham United have appointed former Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo as their new head coach on a three-year deal, following the dismissal of Graham Potter.
The 51-year-old Portuguese manager will take charge of his first match on Monday when the Hammers travel to Everton in the Premier League. He conducted his maiden training session in east London on Saturday afternoon.
Potter was sacked earlier in the day after just eight months at the helm, with West Ham languishing in 19th place. The club said results and performances over the latter half of last season and the start of the current campaign had “not matched expectations.”
Nuno arrives at the London Stadium less than three weeks after being dismissed by Nottingham Forest on September 9, only three games into the season. Despite the abrupt end, he guided Forest to a remarkable seventh-place finish last term — their best since 1994–95.“I am very pleased to be here and very proud to be representing West Ham United,” Nuno said after his appointment. “My objective is to work hard to get the very best from the team and ensure that we are as competitive as we possibly can be.
The work has already started and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.”In the interim, Nuno will be supported by academy coaches Mark Robson, Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine, while further announcements on his permanent backroom staff will follow. (Agencies)
