SHILLONG, Oct 4: As rains relent in the state, work on the much-awaited Shillong Western Bypass is progressing satisfactorily, with implementing agencies preparing to intensify construction activity as the working season begins in Meghalaya.
According to sources, work on Package I is currently ahead of schedule, while progress on Packages II and III is proceeding as planned.
The 38.256-km Shillong Western Bypass is being executed in three packages. The 12.80-km Package I, costing Rs 620 crore, is being implemented by Anusha Projects Pvt. Ltd. and BKD Infrastructures Pvt. Ltd. under a joint venture.
However, sources cautioned that certain challenges may arise, as extensive earth-cutting will be required in several stretches — particularly in Package I — where some hill sections are as high as 60–70 metres.
The 11.99-km Package II, with a project cost of Rs 686 crore, is being undertaken by Narendra Sharma and TK Engineering Consortium Pvt. Ltd. under a joint venture. The third and final Package III, spanning 13.56 km, is being implemented by BRN Infrastructures Pvt. Ltd. at a cost of Rs 562 crore.
Conceived to ease the persistent traffic congestion in Shillong, the Western Bypass project is expected to be completed within two years from the commencement of construction.
