NONGPOH, Oct 4: Four teenage girls lost their lives while another sustained critical injuries after being hit by a speeding truck at Thadrang in Ri-Bhoi on Friday evening.
According to reports, the incident occurred between 6 and 7 pm when a truck carrying saw dust, bearing registration number ML05AC8447, reportedly speeding, ran over five pedestrians who were walking along the roadside.
Three victims died on the spot, while another succumbed to her injuries the following morning at a hospital in Shillong.
The deceased have been identified as Phibapyntngen Rynjah (13), Lashimti Nongrum (13), Theresa Nongrum (19), and Ridahunlang Nongrum (13). The lone survivor, identified as Iupharisa Nongrum (11), sustained serious injuries. All the victims were residents of Thadrang Madan village under Mawlasnai Police Outpost.
Preliminary information suggests that the truck was traveling from Jowai towards Bhoirymbong and was driven by Ferlindes Rymbai (34) of Laitkor, East Khasi Hills district, accompanied by Dwayne Dkhar (31) of Khliehtyrshi, West Jaintia Hills district. Both the driver and his companion sustained injuries after the truck overturned following the collision.
Police have registered a case in connection with the incident, seized the vehicle involved, and initiated further investigation.
