SHILLONG, Oct 7: Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon has expressed concern over the handling of ongoing road construction works on the Shillong Western Bypass and Shillong-Dawki road, alleging that some standard operating procedures (SOPs) were reportedly not being followed.
The MP, who personally visited the construction sites, said that soil and debris had been dumped in ways that could affect nearby paddy fields and banana plantations. He mentioned that he had asked the relevant officials to ensure proper procedures were followed and stressed that measures should be taken to prevent any loss of livelihood for farmers. Syngkon also highlighted that mud from construction sites could flood fields during the rainy season, and suggested that appropriate compensation should be considered for affected farmers.
Regarding the Shillong-Dawki road, Syngkon noted that soil had been deposited near the Umtyngar river, turning the water muddy. He stated that he had been coordinating with NHIDCL officials and requested that soil dumping into the river be stopped.
The MP reminded the authorities that during road widening, debris should be barricaded and disposed of in designated areas, in accordance with SOPs, to ensure both safety and environmental compliance.
