Govt to now regulate motorcycle rental

SHILLONG, Oct 9: The Meghalaya government has notified the Meghalaya Rent a Motor Cycle Operational Rules, 2025, to regulate the commercial and operational activities of rental motorcycles and rental operators.
According to the notification, these rules shall come into force from the date of their publication in the Official Gazette. The notification further stated that no person shall engage in the business of renting motorcycles without obtaining a valid licence under the provisions of these rules.
As per the Rules, an application for the grant or renewal of a licence under Paragraph 6 will be made in Form 1 to the licensing authority having jurisdiction over the area where the applicant resides or has their principal place of business.
The application must be accompanied by a fee of Rs 2,000, according to the Rules.
A licence granted or renewed under Paragraph 6 shall remain valid for a period of five years from the date of issue or renewal.
The notification also specified that it shall be the duty of every hirer to keep the licence holder informed of their movements from time to time. If a vehicle is hired by an individual or company as the leader of a tourist party, it shall be the responsibility of such leader to keep the licence holder informed of the movements of each vehicle on a regular basis.
