Shillong, Oct 9: Political parties, organisations, and citizens in the city are alarmed following the alleged murder of seven-year-old Kyrshanbor Kharmudai from, whose body was discovered at Mawpat on Thursday.
The Nongrah Dorbar Shnong has responded by enhancing local surveillance measures, encouraging residents, particularly those financially capable, to install CCTV cameras. This call for vigilance is particularly pertinent due to the recent disappearance and subsequent deaths of two minors from the area within a span of a month.
During a press briefing, Denis Lynrah, the Rangbah Shnong of Nongrah, stated that discussions are underway to bolster safety measures, while declining to comment on the ongoing police investigation into the murder.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) publicly condemned the murder, labeling it “gruesome” and demanding thorough police investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice.
VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh criticised the Police Department for its perceived failure in safeguarding the community, especially vulnerable children.
The president of Lympung Seng Kynthei (LSK), Theilin Phanbuh, echoed sentiments of shock and fear, emphasising the need for comprehensive investigations into the recent tragedies to alleviate community anxiety.
She noted that the recurrence of such violent incidents instills a significant sense of insecurity among parents, particularly regarding their children’s safety while commuting to school.
The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has expressed outrage over the incident, questioning the government’s efficacy in maintaining public safety, and demanding accountability for the rise in crime.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem called for increased government responsibility in ensuring security, asserting that development efforts are futile without public safety.
Additionally, the Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress expressed profound concern regarding the incident, which mirrors the prior tragedy involving another missing child, Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai. MPMC president Joplyn Scott Shylla highlighted a troubling trend of child disappearances, criticising the lack of timely action and effective law enforcement response post-incidents.
She called for an intensive investigation into both cases and swift justice to prevent further tragedies, stressing the urgency of addressing systemic failures that compromise children’s safety.
