Missing soldiers’ bodies found in J&K’s Anantnag
ANANTNAG, Oct 10: Security forces on Friday found the body of a soldier who had gone missing in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district earlier this week, officials said.The body of another soldier was found from the area on Thursday.The two soldiers of the Army’s elite para unit — Lance Havildar Palash Ghosh and Lance Naik Sujay Ghosh — had gone missing during a combing operation at Kokernag on Tuesday. The operation was launched in the Ahlan Gadole area, following inputs that terrorists were hiding there, the officials said.While the body of one of the soldiers was found on Thursday, the other body was found on Friday, they said, adding that it seems that both died due to hypothermia.According to the officials, the two soldiers went missing after their communication line went out. Helicopters were pressed into aerial reconnaissance to locate the commandos. The Srinagar-based Chinar Corps unit of the Army said the operational team was caught in a severe snowstorm. (PTI)
US ambassador-designate Gor visiting India
NEW DELHI, Oct 10: US Ambassador-designate to India Sergio Gor is undertaking a six-day visit to New Delhi, days after his appointment was confirmed by the Senate.Gor is accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas for the trip from October 9 to 14, according to the US State Department.The visit to New Delhi by the two American officials came amid efforts by the two countries to find ways to firm up a trade deal.“US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor and Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas will travel to India from October 9 to 14,” the US State Department said.It said Gor and Rigas will meet with Indian government counterparts to discuss a wide range of bilateral issues.“The United States will continue to work with India to strengthen our strategic partnership and promote a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” it added. India and the US have recently resumed negotiations for the trade deal after a brief hiatus of a few weeks. (PTI)
Two govt officials held for bribery in Chhattisgarh
BILASPUR, Oct 10: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday arrested two government employees for allegedly demanding and accepting bribes.Chandu Ram Nayak, the in-charge chief engineer (machinery) at Maa Mahamaya Co-operative Sugar Factory Limited in Surajpur, was caught while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000, the official said.He said that Nayak had sought Rs 1 lakh from the complainant to reappoint him for a job at the sugar factory on contractual grounds.The complainant had also given the accused official Rs 1 lakh when he was hired at the factory last year, the official said.In a similar case, Manoj Tondekar, a clerk at the Tribal and Scheduled Caste department, was caught taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 for releasing Rs 2.5 lakh to the beneficiary of a government scheme in Bilaspur, he said.Both officials were arrested and booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, the official said.
