SHILLONG, Oct 10: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Friday informed that the process for expanding the Umroi Airport (Shillong Airport) is progressing steadily, with tenders already floated for the extension project.
Speaking to reporters, Dhar said, “Tender has been called for the extension of the Umroi Airport. The land tender is almost completed.”
He added that the state government is closely coordinating with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to ensure that the long-pending project is executed on time.
It may be mentioned that the expansion of the Umroi Airport has been a key demand for improving air connectivity in Meghalaya, which currently has limited direct flight options. The runway length has long been a bottleneck, restricting the operation of larger aircraft and limiting routes primarily to Kolkata and a few neighbouring cities.
Once completed, the expansion will enable the airport to handle bigger aircraft such as Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s, thereby boosting direct connectivity to metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
