SHILLONG, Oct 11: Referring to the recent confrontation at Lapangap along the Assam-Meghalaya border, state BJP spokesperson M Kharkrang has cautioned that Assam will never be interested in resolving the dispute unless the Meghalaya government pushes for a solution.
His statement followed skirmishes along the inter-state border, with the second phase of border talks suspended for more than two years now, despite the constitution of the regional committees.
Lamenting that the talks between the two states have gone off the track, leading to such incidents, Kharkrang said that Meghalaya is always at the receiving end wherever there is a border dispute between the two states.
“Assam will never be interested in resolving the problem because they have already occupied the place, and for our interest, if we don’t push the issue to resolve it, such things will continue to happen,” he said.
Pointing out that the second round of talks has been lingering for too long, he said nothing has taken shape on the ground. “The issue has to be resolved once and for all at the earliest,” the former police officer added.
As police personnel are deployed in sensitive areas, Kharkrang asked the government to ensure that the battalions are provided with the basic needs. He said the Assam police personnel deployed in the disputed areas “are living comfortably” and the lack of basic amenities for the Meghalaya police personnel will reduce their efficiency and demoralise them.
