Speaker attends CPA conference in Barbados

SHILLONG, Oct 11: Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma is representing the state at the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference in Bridgetown, Barbados.
The week-long conference, which began on October 5, will conclude on Sunday.
The speaker is accompanied by Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma, Officer on Special Duty to the Speaker, Aurelius Warlarpih, Deputy Secretary (R), Daman D.K. Rymmai, and Personal Assistant to the Speaker Dilip Syiemiong.
The global parliamentary meet has drawn more than 600 delegates from over 180 national, state, and provincial legislatures across the Commonwealth. Hosted by the Parliament of Barbados and the CPA Barbados Branch, this year’s conference is being held under the theme ‘The Commonwealth – A Global Partner.’
The Indian delegation is led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and includes Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan along with 36 presiding officers from 24 state and Union Territory Legislatures.
The CPA conference serves as a key platform for dialogue among parliamentarians, focusing on cooperation, democratic values, and good governance. Seven thematic workshops are being held during the event, addressing pressing issues of governance and global concern. The conference underscores the Commonwealth’s shared commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing parliamentary diplomacy to tackle common global challenges.
