RESUBELPARA, Oct 12: In a freak incident, two criminals involved in multiple cases of theft and intimidation were apprehended by the North Garo Hills police after the motorcycle they had stolen met with an accident near Berubari under Bajengdoba Police Station in the district.
According to sources, the NGH police were informed of the accident by local residents and rushed to the spot for inquiry.
Upon arrival, it was found that a motorbike had collided with a tree along NH-51, and both the rider and the pillion were lying on the roadside. The duo sustained injuries and were immediately shifted to the Bajengdoba PHC for medical treatment.
The situation escalated when the gathered crowd discovered arms in the bags carried by the two, leading to an assault on the suspects. Police acted swiftly to rescue them and seized the motorcycle (ML07B7072, Bajaj Platina), which was brought to the police station for safe-keeping.
A medical examination revealed that both the rider and the pillion had consumed alcohol.
The rider, identified as Walcang K Sangma of Salmanpara, South West Garo Hills, sustained swelling on his right forearm, mild abrasions on both hands and an injury on his forehead. On the other hand, the pillion, Mikselbirth Sangma alias Niksengbirth of Gabil Bisa, Rongjeng, East Garo Hills, sustained injuries to his right leg and had restricted movement in his right hip and knee.
From two backpacks found in their possession, police recovered two handmade wooden firearms with barrels, five mobile phones, a ‘khukri’, a tube of Odomos, a strip of Diclowin Plus tablets and some clothes.
During interrogation, it was revealed that Walcang had previously been arrested in a case related to a crime against women at Ampati Police Station and had served seven years in judicial custody. Mikselbirth had also been arrested earlier in a kidnapping case under Ampati PS.
The two met while in judicial custody at the District Jail in Tura, West Garo Hills, and conspired to commit crimes after their release.
“Upon further investigation, they also confessed to having stolen three mobile phones from a public bus and the bike they were riding from Rongmil, East Garo Hills, two nights ago, on October 10. They were proceeding to Assam to sell them when they met with an accident at Berubari,” said district police chief, Swapnil Pawar.
Rongmil Police confirmed the bike theft case, registered as Rongjeng PS Case No. 19/2025 U/S 303(2) BNS.
During questioning, Walcang confessed that the wooden handmade firearms were manufactured by him at his grandmother’s residence at RC Road, Tura, and were intended to be used to threaten the public during the commission of crimes.
A case has been registered against the two accused.
