Shillong, Oct 14: The Shillong Sports Association (SSA) has decided to revive the long-dormant Shillong Games, featuring five disciplines, with the event tentatively scheduled for December this year.
The decision was the key outcome of the SSA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held here on October 11.
Announcing this, SSA President Banteidor Lyngdoh, MLA, said the revival of the multi-sport event would mark a renewed push to promote local talent across disciplines in the state capital.
The AGM, chaired by Lyngdoh, was attended by SSA office bearers and representatives of affiliated clubs. The meeting began with a two-minute silence in memory of the late SS Rapthap, SSA Vice-President, who passed away earlier this year.
SSA General Secretary Dipshon L Nongbri presented the annual general report for 2024-25, while Treasurer Prosper Warjri laid before the house the audited financial statement for the same period.
Among the other resolutions, members proposed the introduction of individual awards such as Player of the Tournament, Best Goalkeeper, and Top Scorer for SSA’s football competitions.
The association also confirmed that yearly football tournaments for children and youth will continue to be a regular feature in its calendar. Additionally, the AGM discussed the implementation of the All India Football Federation’s Central Registration System for players and the need for stricter regulation of local tournaments under SSA guidelines to ensure greater professionalism.
In a notable appointment, P. Rangslang of Mawpat SC was named as the female representative on the SSA Council. With the revival of the Shillong Games on the horizon and a renewed emphasis on youth and structure, the SSA looks poised to usher in a more dynamic phase for sports in Shillong. The SSA’s renewed initiatives signal a fresh chapter for Shillong’s sporting landscape, aiming to blend tradition with modern structure.
