SHILLONG, Oct 21: The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government is struggling to function in the absence of a designated spokesperson.
The problem arose after the removal of Paul Lyngdoh and Ampareen Lyngdoh from the Cabinet. Both were also government spokespersons.
Despite several rounds of discussions, the MDA constituents have yet to agree on a replacement.
Sources told The Shillong Times on Tuesday that a majority of the coalition partners feel that the post should once again go to a United Democratic Party (UDP) minister.
Many suggested that UDP president and Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh be assigned this role, stating that he is the most suitable candidate. However, he reportedly declined the offer, citing health reasons. Even within the NPP, finding a suitable candidate has been a challenge.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong is said to be unwilling to take up the additional responsibility. Discussions are on to request PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak to step in as the government spokesperson.
The absence of a designated spokesperson has raised concerns within the MDA, particularly about who will address major issues or developments when Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is away.
