JOWAI, Oct 27: The Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners Drivers Association (MCTODA) on Monday launched their indefinite strike to put pressure on all cement factories in Jaintia Hills districts to implement government-fixed transportation rates for clinker supplied to cement factories, but the police reportedly attempted to stop and detain trucks, prompting the association members to express strong discontent, alleging that their right to demand what is due to them was being violated.
The protest, called by the MCTODA Jaintia Hills Unit, which represents truck owners and drivers across the state, was held at Wahlartein, NH-6 (Jowai Bypass, Khliehtyrshi).
According to MCTODA Central Body spokesperson Wanchwa Nongtdu, the police action to detain trucks was viewed as a violation of their right to demand what is due to them. He said that during public hearings held by cement companies, the factories often promise to give first preference to local truck owners — promises that have repeatedly gone unfulfilled.
Representing the MCTODA, Nongtdu said the protest was “for the future of our children,” pointing out that many educated youths remain unemployed and that fair transport rates could support local livelihoods.
MCTODA Central Body general secretary Peter Marbaniang said their demand is directed against the cement factories that have failed to implement the government-approved transport rates. He added that the agitation will continue until the fixed rates are enforced.
The MCTODA Jaintia Unit also stated that they are open to discussions with the heads of cement factories, provided such talks take place at the protest site.
During the day-long protest, association members reportedly stopped and turned back several trucks carrying clinker in violation of MCTODA’s call for unity among transporters.
Despite the absence of official permission from the West Jaintia Hills district authorities, who had cited possible disruption to public movement, the protest remained peaceful throughout.
