Shillong, Oct 28: With Meghalaya set to host the National Games within the next two years, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla has assured that preparations are progressing steadily and key sports infrastructures are taking shape across the state.
Speaking to reporters, Shylla informed that the state government has already released the first instalment of funds to various sports associations to facilitate both infrastructure development and athlete training. He added that while other North Eastern states set to co-host a few disciplines are still finalising the events they wish to conduct, Meghalaya remains firmly on schedule.Dismissing claims that the inclusion of co-hosting states was due to inadequate infrastructure in Meghalaya, the minister clarified that the decision was taken at the request of the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. “We are well prepared and confident of completing all projects within the deadline. For one or two projects that might face delays, we already have a backup plan,” he stated.
The minister also mentioned that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will soon carry out inspections of the ongoing projects.
