SHILLONG, Oct 28: Five days have passed without a single drop of water being supplied to the Shillong Cantonment and nearby localities, owing to the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department’s failure to complete repair work under the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme.
On October 21, PHE Chief Engineer RS Nongbri issued a shutdown notice informing the public that there would be a water supply interruption on October 23 from 9 am to 9 pm due to repairs on the pumping main of the scheme. Although the department had assured that every effort would be made to restore supply at the earliest, residents of several areas, including the Shillong Cantonment, have not received water for five consecutive days.
It is learnt that even after the delay, there has been no official update from the PHE regarding the resumption of water supply. The department had reportedly informed the Shillong Cantonment Board that water would be restored from Tuesday. However, another day has passed without any improvement.
The CEO of the Shillong Cantonment Board, Ayush Maurya, confirmed that the PHE department has yet to resume supply. He informed that the Board has been distributing water to many areas through tankers and assured that they would continue to do so even on Wednesday if required.
It also appears that while water has been restored in some areas, repair work is still ongoing in others.
Meanwhile, the situation has caused severe inconvenience to residents, many of whom have been forced to purchase water. Some households have completely run out of water and are anxiously hoping for an early restoration of supply.
