SHILLONG, Oct 29: Director of Don Bosco Youth Centre Fr. Michael Makri has aired concern over the low selection rate of candidates from Meghalaya during a recent cabin crew recruitment drive conducted by India’s largest airline, IndiGo Airlines, in collaboration with the Emporium Skills Training Institute (ESTI).
The recruitment drive, held at the Emporium training centre within the Don Bosco Youth Centre (DBYC), Laitumkhrah, Shillong, saw 700 candidates from across the Northeastern region registering online. Of these, 242 candidates appeared for interviews and assessment rounds, but only four were ultimately selected after a rigorous evaluation process.
Following the recruitment drive, Fr. Makri, while expressing disappointment, encouraged candidates, especially from Meghalaya, to visit the Don Bosco Youth Centre for training and preparation.
“It is disheartening to learn that around 700 students applied for this interview, yet only four were selected. Many candidates, especially from Meghalaya, did not meet the required height, while others faced health or communication challenges, particularly in Hindi and English. I encourage those who were not selected to come to our centre for further training and preparation,” he said.
It may be mentioned that last month, ESTI and Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shillong, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on employment-linked professional training and recruitment in the fields of aviation, hospitality, and luxury international cruise lines.
The partnership aims to empower educated yet unemployed youth from Meghalaya and across the Northeast through globally relevant skill development and placement programmes.
This cabin crew recruitment marked the first event under the new MoU, with more domestic and international employment opportunities expected in the coming months.
ESTI will continue to train aspiring youth at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Shillong, preparing them for gainful employment in over 20 countries worldwide.
He also extended his gratitude to IndiGo Airlines and Emporium Skills Training Institute for their partnership and continued support in creating pathways for the youths of Meghalaya in particular and the Northeast in general in the aviation and service industries.
