SHILLONG, Oct 29: A couple from Punjab has admitted to being involved in the altercation at a Rilbong guest house on Tuesday evening, an incident that initially prompted police to suspect a case of assault.
Police said one Amandeep Singh, currently residing in Upper Mawprem and originally from Wariyah in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, and his wife Rajbir Kaur appeared before the Rilbong Beat House on Wednesday evening and admitted to their involvement in the incident.
The couple told police they had an argument at the Shillong Tower Hotel over Rajbir’s alleged online friendship with one Akash Joshi, who is a transgender. The quarrel reportedly turned physical, leaving both with minor injuries before they fled the hotel, leaving Joshi behind. They said the fight stemmed from a misunderstanding and expressed unwillingness to file a complaint or undergo medical examination.
Earlier, police had begun investigating a possible assault after a woman was seen bleeding in the hotel corridor and a couple was spotted leaving on a scooty without a registration number. Joshi, who was found at the scene, appeared intoxicated and failed to produce identification. The hotel manager was also pulled up for not maintaining a proper check-in register. “It is a normal thing that there are visitors who will be visiting our guest. But we did not expect that the visitor would create a problem,” a hotel staff claimed.
With the couple confirming their involvement and declining further action, police said the incident appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute, and no case has been registered.
