SHILLONG, Oct 31: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday announced that the first phase of the citywide CCTV installation project covering 48 localities with 250 cameras will be completed by the end of November.
Addressing a consultative meeting with Rangbah Shnongs and locality leaders from the Greater Shillong Planning Area, the Chief Minister said the initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to enhance public safety and improve surveillance.
Sangma further emphasised that high-crime zones will receive priority attention under the city’s safety upgrade plan, with enhanced lighting, CCTV coverage, and improved pedestrian pathways to ensure public security and accessibility.
To streamline operations and address previous jurisdictional overlaps, Sangma informed that the Shillong Municipal Board will now act as the sole maintenance agency for both CCTV systems and streetlights.
This move, he said, will ensure better accountability and faster response in addressing technical issues and maintenance needs.
