Guwahati, Nov.3: One of Assam’s revered musicians, eminent flautist Dipak Sarma passed away on Monday morning in Chennai after battling a prolonged illness.
Sarma, 57, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital here before he was taken to a multi-specialty hospital in Chennai for advanced treatment about two weeks back.
Born on August 23, 1968, at Panigaon, Nalbari district, Sarma was a resident of Ambikagiri Nagar here.
A disciple of the legendary flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Sarma’s illustrious musical journey began in 1992. Since then, he has not looked back, having collaborated with some of Assam’s greatest cultural icons, including Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg.
A versatile artist known for his soulful melodies, blending Indian classical and contemporary music, Sarma also served as the music director for films such as Jonki Panei, Jatinga Ityadi, and Luitak Bhetibo Kune.
In a condolence message on social media, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated: “Deeply anguished to learn about the untimely demise of eminent flutist Dipak Sarma, who has contributed immensely towards Assamese music and popularised flute as a musical instrument. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family members and well-wishers.”
Last month, the chief minister had provided financial aid to the flautist for advanced treatment in Chennai.
In January 2023, Sarma had reached out to his followers on social media seeking financial help for an expensive liver surgery outside the state, stating: “I am sure that I can again take my flute in my hand. With your kind monetary support, I hope to play my flute again.”
