SHILLONG, Nov 2: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has said that the efforts of Tripura royal scion and TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma to create a forum of regional parties of Northeast India to collectively bargain with the Government of India may be a genuine intention but has no political sense for the indigenous tribals of Meghalaya.
VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh stated that some of the political parties expected to be major partners in the proposed forum pose more threat to the people of Meghalaya than even the national parties.
“Each state has its own specific politics. The presence of such a forum will eventually lead to legitimisation of the highly corrupt and anti-people party,” Myrboh said.
He added that the people of Meghalaya need a genuine regional party that has the courage to stand for the interests of the indigenous tribals.
“The state has already suffered under the reign of pseudo regional parties who are regional by force rather than by choice,” Myrboh remarked
Debbarma, the founder of TIPRA Motha and a key ally of the ruling BJP in Tripura, has signalled a major political move aimed at uniting regional parties across the Northeast.
In a recent social media update, he revealed ongoing dialogues with various regional parties, advocating for a united front among the northeastern states to achieve equitable development.
He revealed that discussions were under way with regional parties from Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Dima Hasao, Manipur, and Mizoram and that a formal announcement regarding the new alliance, or political platform, will be made shortly.
