SHILLONG, Nov 5: The deadline to complete the new Meghalaya Assembly building has been extended again. The target for completing the project is now June 2026.
“The building was supposed to be completed by March 2026, but the vendor selected for the interior design has sought six months,” Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma told journalists after chairing a review meeting on Wednesday to assess the progress of the work.
“There are a lot of elements which we have to consider, including audio-visual, acoustics, and security systems, and we cannot be in a rush,” he said, adding that he would now review the progress of the work on the building monthly.
After yet another extension of the timeline, the Speaker said that they expect to hold the 2026 autumn session of the Assembly in the new building.
The government has engaged the interior designer of the new Parliament building for the Assembly job.
Expressing satisfaction with the redesigned dome, the Speaker said that the new design has been engineered to evenly distribute the roof’s weight and has been vetted by IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee.
“Despite the delays, there has been no cost escalation in the project,” he said.
He further said that the detailed project reports are being prepared for the second phase of the project, which will include staff quarters and other essential facilities, and that the central ministries concerned have been approached for necessary approvals, as the project requires huge funding.
