SHILLONG, Nov 5: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who is also the Home Minister, on Wednesday dismissed reports that the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) is regrouping. His statement came in the wake of the arrest of five persons for allegedly indulging in extortion activities in South West Khasi Hills district.
Asked about the incident, Tynsong said the arrested persons are a group of criminals.
On the reports about the regrouping of GNLA, he said there is nothing like that, adding that the government is taking care of the matter.
“We will not spare anyone who tries to cross the line. We will make sure that the law prevails,” Tynsong said.
A businessman in South West Khasi Hills had lodged an FIR with the police recently, alleging that he received an extortion note of Rs 5.5 lakh from the Garo National Liberation Army Regroup (GNLA-R), followed by threat calls from an unknown number.
The police apprehended the main suspect, identified as Mann R Marak (25), who is a resident of Upper Rajapara village in South West Khasi Hills. Based on his statement, four more suspects, including a minor, were arrested.
