Shillong, Nov 8: Once a city with little to offer in terms of structured cricket coaching, Shillong has witnessed a quiet sporting revolution over the past few years.
Where young enthusiasts once learned the game on open fields with minimal guidance, institutions like the Shillong Cricket Academy (SCA) have now transformed the city into a budding hub for cricketing talent.
Established a few years ago, the academy has quickly grown into a centre of excellence for aspiring cricketers from across Meghalaya.
Located in Lawsohtun, it currently trains around 130 young players under the supervision of 23 qualified coaches and staff members.
From mastering batting techniques to improving bowling precision and fielding discipline, the academy offers holistic, professional training that blends passion with structure. Biswajit Das Gupta, Chief Selector of the Meghalaya Ranji team and one of the academy’s senior coaches, emphasised that the programme focuses not just on skill enhancement but on developing the complete athlete. “We work on fitness, discipline, and mental resilience — key aspects for any player aiming to reach higher levels. With consistent support and improved facilities, Meghalaya can definitely produce national-level cricketers in the future,” he said.
Among the academy’s many hopefuls is Pratik Kumar Rajak, who has been part of the SCA for the past five years.
“The coaches here have completely changed how I understand and approach the game. My dream is to represent Meghalaya and make my state proud,” he shared with a smile.
As cricket continues to gain momentum across the state, the Shillong Cricket Academy stands at the heart of this sporting transformation — turning dreams into discipline, and passion into performance.
