London, Nov 8: West Ham United staged a spirited comeback to secure a vital 3–2 victory over Burnley in their Premier League relegation clash at the London Stadium on Saturday, following a dramatic afternoon both on and off the pitch.
The build-up to the match was dominated by fan unrest, as nearly 10,000 Hammers supporters marched through Stratford carrying a coffin and hearse to protest against the club’s ownership and management. Chants calling for chairman David Sullivan and vice-chair Karren Brady to step down echoed through the streets, reflecting growing frustration over the club’s direction, poor recruitment, and perceived loss of identity since moving to the London Stadium.
On the pitch, things initially went from bad to worse for the home side when Burnley striker Zian Flemming headed in Lesley Ugochukwu’s cross midway through the first half. Though VAR checked for a potential offside in the build-up, the goal stood, leaving the hosts trailing and tempers flaring in the stands.West Ham finally found a response just before half-time, as Callum Wilson nodded home from close range after Crysencio Summerville’s effort took a deflection into his path — a much-needed lifeline that steadied the team’s nerves. The equaliser proved crucial, preventing what could have been a chorus of boos at the interval.
The second half began cagily, but West Ham’s persistence eventually paid off. Substitute Tomas Soucek, introduced in the 62nd minute, turned the game on its head. First, he bundled the ball over the line after Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka spilled Lucas Paquetá’s cross, and moments later, his long-range shot forced another error from Dubravka, allowing Kyle Walker-Peters to tap in from close range.
Burnley managed a late consolation when Josh Cullen capitalised on a mistake by Alphonse Areola, but the final whistle came swiftly after, sealing a nervy yet precious win for the Hammers.Though the performance was far from polished, the result offered manager Nuno Espírito Santo a second consecutive league victory and a glimmer of hope in their battle for survival.
