SHILLONG, Nov 9: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Bengaluru Unit has urged Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to expedite the functioning of the proposed Meghalaya House in Bengaluru, stressing that its early completion would provide crucial support to students, patients, and other citizens of Meghalaya residing in Karnataka.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the Union expressed gratitude to the government for acquiring a building for the facility but noted that it has yet to become operational. The KSU said the Meghalaya House would serve as a much-needed centre for accommodation and assistance, particularly for those travelling to Bengaluru for studies, medical treatment, or work. The memorandum also called upon the government to pursue the introduction of at least one direct flight per week between Shillong and Bengaluru. The Union stated that such connectivity would significantly ease the travel difficulties faced by the growing number of Meghalaya citizens in the southern city.
In addition, the KSU appealed for the creation of an official mechanism to assist in the repatriation of mortal remains of deceased citizens from Bengaluru to Meghalaya. The Union emphasised that coordinated and financial support from the state government in such cases would greatly relieve bereaved families during times of distress.
The memorandum further requested the appointment or designation of officers from the Meghalaya Secretariat to monitor the welfare of Meghalaya residents in Bengaluru. In case regular visits are not possible, the Union suggested that specific officers be assigned as official contact points to facilitate direct communication with Shillong.
Signed by KSU Bengaluru Unit President Donboklang Nongphud, the memorandum concluded with confidence in the Chief Minister’s leadership and urged timely government action on the concerns raised.
