SHILLONG, Nov 9: Congress MP from Tura, Saleng A. Sangma, has said that politics remains the only path to bring about real transformation and revolutionise the system, urging educated and capable youth to step forward and take part in political life.
“Politics is the backbone of the society. One decision can build or break society. That is why we need educated youth with potential, who can once and for all change the system,” Sangma said.
He stressed that politics should not be viewed with disdain but recognised as an essential force that shapes every aspect of life.
“Ask any younger generation and they say they hate politics, but they don’t know the actual meaning of politics. It is oxygen — we require it in every angle and every way,” he remarked.
Turning to unemployment, the MP said the government alone cannot provide jobs to all and emphasised the need to nurture entrepreneurship.
“We have limited institutions, and the government cannot provide jobs to everyone. There should be an alternative where we can bring in private entrepreneurship so that one becomes the employer and not the employee.
Right now, the Centre is pushing in a lot of money, but awareness and workshops are needed so that people can avail such facilities,” he said.
On the issue of delayed utilisation certificates (UCs) by northeastern states, including Meghalaya, Sangma criticised the lack of accountability that leads to funds being returned to the Centre.
“Not only work and project funds, even scholarships — not only from NEC but also from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs — are affected.
How many of our students are getting scholarships from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs or NEC? When we vote for an incompetent government, do you think this will not happen? Look at NHM also — our people are crying for medication,” he said.
