SHILLONG, Nov 10: Panic gripped residents and passers-by at Lai Lad, Nongrim Hills, on Monday evening after a grey backpack was found abandoned near an electric pole.
Residents who spotted the unattended bag immediately alerted the Rangbah Shnong, Bantylli L. Narry, who in turn informed the police, suspecting that it might contain explosives.
A team from the police and bomb disposal squad quickly rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area, clearing traffic and dispersing onlookers as rumours spread that an abandoned backpack had been spotted.
The bomb squad later opened the backpack and found it contained only clothes.
