SHILLONG, Nov 10: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma and Deputy Speaker Limison D Sangma are attending the 22nd Annual Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-III Conference in Kohima. The Nagaland Legislative Assembly is hosting the event from November 9 to 13.
Speaking at the conference, Thomas A Sangma described the legislature as the “architect of national policy.” He said that through progressive legislation, legislatures shape the framework for economic growth, social equity, and technological advancement.
“An equally vital function of the Legislature is to ensure that governance remains accountable, transparent and people-centric,” Sangma said, adding that legislative oversight is essential for maintaining public trust.
Speakers, Deputy Speakers, and senior officials from all North Eastern state legislative assemblies are attending the conference. The sessions focus on strengthening democratic institutions and sharing best parliamentary practices.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the conference on Monday, noting the North Eastern region’s rich cultural heritage and strong democratic values. He commended the region’s assemblies for framing policies tailored to local aspirations, which contributes to inclusive growth. Birla also spoke on the importance of regional development, industrial growth, and the use of technology for transparency and accountability in governance.
In his address, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio called on legislatures to reaffirm their commitment to parliamentary democracy and cooperative federalism. He urged CPA Zone-III to continue shaping inclusive development policies for the region.
Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh stated the Union Government’s commitment to cultural diversity and inclusive economic growth.
