SHILLONG, Nov 16: Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon has urged the Transport department to impose an outright ban on trucks operating with illegal body extensions, blaming them for the alarming and swift deterioration of newly constructed roads.
“I found out why the roads deteriorated so quickly few weeks after being made one of the main reasons are the trucks which extend their body which is illegal,” Syngkon asserted during an inspection on Sunday.
He elaborated on how these modifications are damaging critical infrastructure: “What is happening the body is extended upward, more overload and more weight on the road… The weight is not equally distributed with the illegal extension and in turn spoils the road as a lot of pressure is put on the road.”
Syngkon, who has been raising the red flag on this issue previously, added, “Last time I urged the concerned departments to stop these trucks from plying as they are the main reason for the roads to be damaged.”
He made it clear that without immediate regulatory intervention, illegal vehicle modifications will continue to undermine the state’s infrastructure and safety efforts.
