SHILLONG, Nov 18: A public rally will be held on Wednesday at Madan Langning by the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Thaiñ Mawkynrew, in collaboration with the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP), Mawkynrew Circle, and several other local organisations to protest against the increasing presence of illegal liquor sellers in the area. The rally will begin at 10 am from Khim Kharai and culminate at Lhon.
A letter submitted by the FKJGP Mawpyrshong Unit to the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills on November 13 raised serious concern over the proliferation of illegal liquor outlets in Madan Langning.
According to the organisation, unchecked illegal liquor trade has led to frequent disturbances and growing insecurity among residents, particularly affecting women and children who reportedly feel unsafe even while moving around the locality.
The FKJGP Mawpyrshong stated that the situation has worsened due to the absence of a Sordar or village administration to oversee law and order in Madan Langning.
The organisation believes this vacuum in local governance has contributed to the tragic incident on November 9, which resulted in the death of one of the resident of the area.
The FKJGP has urged the district administration to strictly enforce relevant laws to prevent further incidents and restore peace in the area.
Speaking to reporters, FKJGP Mawkynrew Circle president Shalanstar Mynsong said that, according to information received from the victim’s family, the fatal incident occurred near the victim’s residence at around 6 pm on November 9.
The victim was reportedly called outside by the accused, who then stabbed him with a sharp weapon.
Mynsong added that earlier in the day, both men had consumed alcohol together, and the accused had been looking for the victim’s nephew.
Following the attack, the accused surrendered at the Madanrting Police Station. Police have arrested him and are conducting a thorough investigation into the case.
