TURA, Nov 22: Cabinet minister Marcuise N. Marak on Saturday linked Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s legacy to present-day nation-building efforts led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Speaking at the district-level Padyatra (Unity March) in Tura, Marak termed the event historic, organised in honour of a “veritable Titan and steadfast steward who believed India is One.”
The march, organised by the West Garo Hills District Administration in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra and the District Sports Office, commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of the Iron Man of India while promoting the spirit of Ek Bharat, Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Marak highlighted that the event formed part of the nationwide Sardar@150 Unity March initiative launched on October 6 by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya. Addressing the gathering, he urged the youths to embrace the values of love, unity, peace and brotherhood, while reminding them that just as Sardar Patel shaped India with courage and conviction, today’s generation carries the responsibility of strengthening the nation.
Following the minister’s remarks, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal noted that the march symbolised collective responsibility toward national development.
Highlighting the relevance of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission, Aggarwal encouraged support for local entrepreneurship, citing local LED bulb manufacturing in the district as an example of grassroots innovation contributing to livelihood generation.
He also expressed confidence that promoting similar initiatives would contribute to a stronger and self-reliant India.
It may be mentioned that the programme commenced at William Point with the ceremonial garlanding of Sardar Patel’s portrait.
The march covered the route from William Point through Hawakhana, Tetengkol, Jerusalem, and Babupara, before concluding at DC Park.
Hundreds of youths, government officials, MDC Bernard N. Marak and community leaders walked together.
On the occasion, participants also took the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to responsible citizenship.
