SHILLONG, Nov 24: The Congress is not very optimistic about the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election where it is pitted against a confident National People’s Party (NPP).
Tura MP Saleng Sangma said the Congress has nothing to lose in the autonomous district council elections as it does not have even a single MLA in the state.
“But during poll campaign, we will bring the truth and the ground reality before the people,” the Congress leader said, explaining that the party will highlight the issue of drugs and how the culture, the traditions and the Sixth Schedule are being infringed upon by the Panchayati Raj system in the state.
According to Sangma, the Congress will also highlight how land alienation is taking place and how the rights and the powers of the autonomous district councils are being allegedly seized by the government.
He downplayed the NPP’s claims that the Congress’ momentum fizzled out after the recent Bihar elections results. “Bihar and Meghalaya are totally different. The Bihar results are not going to have any impact in Meghalaya,” Sangma said confidently.
According to him, the choice ultimately lies with the people even as all political parties try to showcase and defend their ideologies.
“Our idea is to show the truth to the public. It will be their choice to accept those who destroy their culture or those who protect it,” the MP said.
Asked about money power which plays an important role in elections, he said money may last only a few days but it is up to people to make a real difference in a democracy.
