SHILLONG, Nov 24: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Monday sharply criticised the NPP-led MDA Government for its failure to push the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to make progress in the probe into the Mukroh firing incident that claimed the lives of five Meghalaya villagers on November 22, 2022.
Speaking to reporters, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said the state government has a duty to ensure that those responsible for the deaths are brought to justice without further delay.
He said the case has been with the CBI for nearly three years, yet there is no visible progress.
“It is the government’s responsibility to follow up vigorously and ensure the investigation reaches its logical conclusion,” he said.
He recalled that the HYC had from day one demanded strict action against the Assam Forest personnel who allegedly opened fire on innocent villagers trying to stop illegal timber smuggling. While both Meghalaya and Assam had initially constituted separate Commissions of Inquiry, neither report has been made public nor acted upon, he pointed out.
On the third anniversary of the incident observed on November 22, the Dorbar Shnong of Mukroh also expressed deep disappointment over the lack of seriousness shown by the authorities.
Synrem warned that until the decades-old border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam is resolved once and for all, residents of border areas will continue to live under the shadow of such violent incidents.
