SHILLONG, Dec 4: The State BJP has expressed gratitude to the state government for acknowledging its observations and recommendations on reforms to the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) examination system.
State BJP chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang stated that the party appreciates the government and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for recognising the points it had raised.
According to him, the party had recommended that the MPSC adopt a format similar to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), particularly on eligibility conditions for candidates in their final year of graduation.
He said that while UPSC allows such candidates to appear for the preliminary examination on the condition that they produce their graduation certificate before the mains, MPSC requires the degree at the application stage, resulting in what it described as a loss of one year for eligible aspirants.
He also highlighted the absence of a fixed examination schedule in MPSC, saying that unlike the UPSC’s annual cycle, MPSC examinations are conducted only when vacancies arise, leading to prolonged uncertainty for candidates.
He noted that several senior BJP leaders, including former civil servants, had been raising the issue from multiple platforms. It added that State BJP president Rikman G Momin had written to the Chief Minister on the matter. The party said the government has assured detailed examination, a feasibility study and an assessment of possible implementation measures.
