GUWAHATI, Dec. 8: The Assam Congress has written to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), seeking an independent inquiry into the multiple allegations of financial, administrative and statutory irregularities in Tezpur University over the past several years.
In a letter addressed to the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) on Monday, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia along with party legislators, Nurul Huda and Sibamoni Bora, called for a thorough, time-bound, impartial inquiry into the alleged financial and administrative irregularities at Tezpur University.
“Tezpur University, a central university established under the Tezpur University Act, 1993, has been undergoing severe institutional unrest for several months. Students, faculty members and staff unions have submitted numerous written representations raising concerns regarding procurement-related irregularities, tender manipulation, misallocation and misuse of public funds, violation of statutory procedures, irregular appointments and extensions, withholding of retirement dues and non-availability of essential documents relating to the appointment and qualifications of the vice-chancellor, as per an official RTI reply dated November 19, 2025,” the Congress leaders wrote in the letter.
The party leaders called for verification of the procurement records, tender documents, and financial transactions from the past several years besides verification of the RTI-related claim that crucial documents pertaining to the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment and qualifications are “not available in the office.”
Further, the Congress leaders, while seeking accountability and transparency in accordance with the laws governing public institutions, stated that given the scale of public funds involved and the importance of Tezpur University for the region, an independent investigation was essential to restore institutional credibility.
The party’s request for a CBI probe comes in the wake of protests by students of the university against vice-chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh since mid-September over alleged corruption and other irregularities committed by him, demanding his removal and a probe into his actions.
The Ministry of Education on Saturday had issued a written assurance that Singh would no longer administer the university and that a formal inquiry would be initiated.
